St Columba’s Campus
History. Saint Columba’s began as a mission, started by the Bishop Neil Alexander, the ninth Bishop of Atlanta, and our launch was aided by a generous grant from St. Martin in the Fields parish in Atlanta. On the 19th March 2005, the Feast of St Joseph, we broke ground to build the 93rd parish of the Diocese of Atlanta. Construction on Phase I of the multi-phase development plan was completed in August 2006 and we moved from our temporary worship location at South Forsyth Middle school to our permanent home at 939 James Burgess Road in Suwanee.
Today. This master site plan illustrates how our 16 acres of land will be developed. Maintaining a careful use of natural green space, capitalizing on the rolling terrain and scenic pond, the campus once developed will be able to address many ministry needs of the parish and community around us. Our current church building consists of a nave that seats 275 people, a lady chapel for smaller weekday worship, a small but very functional kitchen, a narthex that is used for fellowship and hospitality ministries, a nursery, and parish offices. We have three temporary cottages that provide space for Sunday school and community group meetings. Shortly after Phase I was completed a memorial garden was added to the east wall of the church where parishioners may chose to have their ashes buried. Each Easter we begin the Easter Vigil at the memorial garden.
The Future. Phase II calls for the construction of an Education and Administrative building to meet the needs of our growing youth, teenage, and adult ministries. Phase III will be the largest phase and will build the permanent church home with a spacious nave, chancel, choir, and small chapel for weekday use. Phase IV will construct a large multipurpose building that can be adapted for recreational activities, including athletic fields, as well as the potential for a parish based school or other community ministry type facility. Included at this time will be an outdoor altar/worship area, and large pavilion with outdoor cooking facilities. Throughout all phases of development, we will hold on to the friendly, welcoming, mission-centered feeling that has made St. Columba’s the thriving parish community it is today.
